Welcome to the pets and animal section of Kensington Pond Books. Since before the dawn of time animals have played an important role in all of man's endeavors. The early man used dogs to warn them of danger and if necessary protect them. Dogs also became man's first hunting companion and proved invaluable in tracking game, a job many dogs still perform.

All early civilizations used animals for hunting .The ancient Persians trained falcons to hunt a sport that is still popular through out the world. Pigeons became man's first form of long distance communication as they were trained to carry messages long distances and return home with a response.

The mighty elephant was used to carry men on great hunts as well as into battle. The famous Carthaginian, general Hannibal led his great war elephants over the Alps to attack Rome from the rear. Roman chronicles tell of the tremendous fear the attacking elephants created.

In Egypt cats were trained to hunt small game, and as statues and hieroglyphics from that period reveal, they were also revered as gods. A position many domestic cats still enjoy.

The animal that has contributed most to man's journey through the ages is the horse. Through history the horse has been used in hunting, warfare, farming, transportation and recreation. Without the horse, there wouldn't have been a chariot or wagon. Imagine the great generals of history such as Alexander the Great, Ghengis Khan or General Robert E. Lee without their war horses. Think how tiring fox hunting would have been without the horse. Not only has the horse been a working companion, but also a noble friend.

The history of man and the world we live in would be drastically different without the help and companionship of animals and let's not forget the first creature to leave earth and travel in space, Laika, the Russian dog who went in orbit aboard Sputnik 2 on November 3, 1957.
