It all began on December 1, 1891, when James Naismeth an instructor
at a YMCA training school decide to create an indoor game for his
students. His idea was to create a game of skill and coordination
that could be played indoors during the winter months. He hung a
box from the balcony at each end of the gymnasium with the point
of the game being to move the ball down the gym floor and place
the ball in the opposing teams basket. It was a slow game
because after a team scored the janitor would have to set up a ladder
and remove the ball from the basket so the game could continue.
The ladder was a very important part of early basketball.
